The members of the construction
industry are stakeholders in a
vital component of the South Australian economy. Three broad areas of endeavour
define the industry's activities. They are residential, non-residential
and engineering construction.
The industry contributes approximately 6% to the State's Gross Domestic Product. The industry generates over $5 billion in work in South Australia to
which the residential building sector is the largest contributor at 50%.
The construction industry employs more than 60,000 people making it the seventh largest employer in South Australia.
A defining structural characteristic of the industry is the large
number of firms employing less than 20 people. In stark contrast to this
characteristic is the small number of major contractors who dominate the
limited number of high value contracts. These major contractors are better
positioned to respond to changes in demand and can devote resources to
competing in interstate and overseas markets. Consequently, they have
an overriding influence in the industry.
A number of professional and industry associations represent participants
in the South Australian construction industry.
Construction Industry Forum (CIF)
The Construction Industry Forum (CIF)
was established to provide a forum at which industry problems and opportunities
can be identified and aired and to provide a mechanism for subsequent
issues to be addressed. The Forum was formed by industry and with the
agreement and encouragement of Government through the then Minister for
Information and Contract Services.
With the complex interelationships within the industry it is important
that these issues be addressed on an industry wide basis for the benefit
of all sectors of the industry through an executive composed of representatives
from each sector of the industry who can speak for the industry and co-ordinate
the resolution of urgent issues of the day.
